If you are interested in taking your piano playing to the next level, I think I may have struck the right chord for you.  Just last week, I was contacted by my friends over at HearandPlay.com who specialize in teaching people how to play piano by ear.

Jermaine Griggs, the President of HearandPlay, just let me know that his site had recently been updated with a few new piano resources…

When I finally checked it out (because I was very busy last week), I noticed one particular article that discusses the differences between musicians who play piano from sheet music and others who play by ear — some of the advantages and disadvantages of both.

http://bit.ly/300pgospel

The article focuses more on the advantages of playing by ear — obviously because that’s their specialty. Here are just a few of the many examples of what they said (you’ll have to check out the article for yourself to get the full story):

Advantages of Playing Piano By Ear from Have you seen this new article by HearandPlay?

1) “Being able to instantly recognize chords that are played in songs even without being at a piano.”

How does this help you?
*************************

“You are able to learn songs faster and easier because you understand why chords are played at certain points in songs.”

http://bit.ly/300pgospel

2) “Not required to memorize chord progressions (pattern of chords played one after the other) because understanding them will automatically incline you to know what chord to play next.”

*************************
How does this help you?
*************************

“Allows you to improvise and add your own “flavor” to the song. This is especially advantageous when playing in a church as you can never predict how long a song will be sung or what key the singer might resolve to. In a band, this might be helpful if the leader simply instructs everyone to surprisingly repeat a part of the song or change the key in which the song is currently being played in.”

3) “Will allow you to use the same methods to play virtually any song you want (most songs; don’t quote me if you’re referring to Mozart as this might take more practice than most other songs).”

*************************
How does this help you?

“Saves you the money and time of having to go out and buy the sheet music to a song that you’ve already learned how to play by using the ability of your ear to recognize melodies, chords, and progressions. However, buying the sheet music isn’t a bad idea if you want to learn specific parts to songs that have high
levels of complexity.”

You know… I could really go on and on about this article, but due to the lack of space, I’m going to have to send you over there so you can check it out for yourself at Have you seen this new article by HearandPlay?

Try it now…………………….

(…and if you’re really serious about taking your piano playing to the next level, you might want to consider taking them up on their 300-pg course, “The Secrets to Playing Piano by Ear”).

Meanwhile, let me know if you have any questions and I’ll answer or pass them to the right folks at HearandPlay.com.

All the best,

P.S. – There’s also a little section in the article that talks about major and minor scales, chords, and progressions. Check out that section too at HearandPlay.

Gospel Music Series finale to feature Eternity, Men of Harmony

Gospel Music Series finale to feature Eternity, Men of Harmony

Eternity and the Men of Harmony will appear in the final concert of the 2009-10 Gospel Music Wisconsin’s 32nd annual concert series, sponsored by the Men of Harmony, with performances at 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, April 24, at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts.

Concert-goers will enjoy the up-beat, gospel quartet harmony sounds of Eternity. In the style of the Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Brothers, Gaither Vocal Band and Signature Sound Quartet, this energetic foursome features a rich blend of four-part quartet singing and a positive, family-friendly stage show.

While they count it a privilege to sing together, they say that this is all the “warm-up act for the real eternity.”

Eternity enjoys building a playful rapport with the audience while delivering rock-solid harmonies in their updated version of gospel quartet sound.

Eternity has produced a unique 31-day devotional book, featuring a song and a corresponding devotional thought written by a member of the group, which will be available at its product table. Each day in the book features a song and a corresponding devotional thought written by a member of the group.

Now in its 40th year, the Men of Harmony men’s chorus exists for the sole purpose of glorifying God through music. With its distinctive ministry in song , which it has done for 39 years, the Men of Harmony has a rich heritage of stalwart men committed to this ministry, with more than 500 concerts in the Midwest, numerous recordings and supporting Christian organizations. Its new CD, “God on the Cross,” was released in January.

Though most of the group call Sheboygan their home, the Men of Harmony chorus draws men from the surrounding areas as well. At least 15 churches and 10 denominations are represented in the chorus.

In addition to concert appearances in churches, nursing homes and Christian groups, the Men of Harmony support a number of Christian service projects. It financially supports Christian radio station WJUB with studios in Plymouth. Each year it offers a four-year scholarship to a graduating high school member who commits to Christian music as a course of study. The crown jewel of their support is to sponsor the Gospel Music Wisconsin Concert Series that brings Christian artists to Weill Center.

Tickets for the Eternity/Men of Harmony concerts are priced at $20 each in advance, or $25 at the door. Children under 18 are free, if accompanied by an adult.

Tickets may be paid for by check, Master Card or Visa. All ticket holders will automatically be entitled to renewal privileges for future concert series.

For tickets or more information, call (920) 452-9422 or (800) 246-9324. Complete concert series information is also available at www.gospelmusicwisconsin.com.

Home Recording Studio Setup – Great Sounds From Home

So you’ve been playing guitar in your bedroom for years and have decided to purchase a Home Recording Studio Setup. There are so many audio Interfaces currently available that this seemingly simple task can easily become quite confusing. An audio interface or DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is a device that handles input and output of audio and MIDI to and from your computer. Some of the questions you’re most likely to ask may sound a little like: ‘Should I spend as little as possible?’, ‘Do I spend a little more in the hope that I may need some of the features on the more expensive unit?’, ‘Do I lash out and find myself sitting in front of a unit with little knowledge as to what 90% of its features actually do!?’. Sound familiar?

Before investing in a home recording studio setup for the first time, I would strongly consider some of the following:

How many inputs at any given time will I need?

  • Given that there can be so many different projects in a recording scenario, 2 Inputs may be all you need. With today’s technologies, musicians can easily create ‘Commercial’ sounding recordings with drums, strings, keys, bass, guitars and vocals with only two audio inputs and a MIDI I/O. Or, do you wish to record a Live Band in which you’ll need at least 16 tracks? That’s not to say you can’t record a band with only 8 tracks, or 2 for that matter… you will just have less control of each individual instrument. Do you need the inputs to support Line Level, Accept a Bass or Electric Guitar (DI) and power my microphone with 48V Phantom power? Do you want to utilise the Digital output of your Guitar Amp Simulator or synthesizer? If so, you’ll be needing either a S/PDIF or optical input.

What programme is best for my needs?

  • Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Sonar, Adobe Audition and Cubase are just a few of the many programmes users can choose from. But which one is best for you? Should you go with industry standard Pro Tools or, Logic Pro with better MIDI capabilities? Would Cubase suit your needs as you can use it with a broader range of Hardware? As you can guess, different programmes excel where others may not be as capable. Find out what programme suits the style of music you’re most likely going to be recording.
  • Will the programme work with your computer and operating system? Does it support MAC and PC? Check online forums for compatibility issues with your computer. Does the particular unit you’re thinking of buying require fire wire or USB? Does your computer have both of these inputs?

Does my studio have to be portable?

  • Some recording studios are used solely as editing suites where inputs are never needed. Thus, manufactures have invented USB styled portable hardware. Many of the units on today’s market are, in fact, portable. It’s only when you combine many other pieces of hardware where setups become difficult to transport. Do you want to have it placed in a rack so if down the track, you can add other pieces of gear?

Cover Bands And Why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own.

Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes is a cover band the goes through three decades during their performance and have costume changes for each decade. They play the top hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Another successful cover band that performs hits from a certain time era is the Three Dog Night band. They cover a variety of songs from the 60s and 70s. A fun place to go in Austin, TX is the Cedar Street courtyard where you can see the band called the Spazmatics perform 80s hits.

While some cover bands focus on a particular decade or decades, other bands that do covers focus on a single group. They are often called tribute cover bands. A popular tribute band that covers all the greatest hits from the original band called ABBA is called Gabba. A tribute band that performs only Beatle
